Effective 1 April 2026 Income-tax Act, 2025 Replaces the 1961 Act

After six decades, the Income-tax Act, 1961 stands repealed and the Income-tax Act, 2025 has taken its place. The new Act is a consolidation and simplification exercise, reducing the statute from over 800 sections to 536 without altering the underlying tax policy or rates.

Notified 20 March 2026 New Rules, Forms and the "Tax Year"

The Income-tax Rules, 2026 supersede the 1962 Rules, with a fresh set of forms. The dual concept of "previous year" and "assessment year" has been replaced by a single Tax Year running from 1 April to 31 March.

Transitional position What Continues Under the Old Act

Income earned up to 31 March 2026 remains governed by the 1961 Act, and assessments, appeals and other proceedings already in motion continue under it. The first returns under the new Act fall due in the 2027 filing cycle.
