Scope and Recent Changes

Mandatory since FY 2023-24 Audit Trail Reporting

Companies maintaining books in accounting software must use software with a non-disableable audit trail. Statutory auditors are separately required to report on whether the feature operated throughout the year, was not tampered with, and has been preserved.

Effective 1 April 2026 Tax Audit Under the New Act

With the Income-tax Act, 2025 replacing the 1961 Act, tax audit provisions now sit under renumbered sections, and the corresponding forms have been reissued under the Income-tax Rules, 2026. Reporting references should be updated accordingly.

What an audit provides Reasonable, Not Absolute, Assurance

An audit is conducted on a test-check basis and expresses an opinion on whether the financial statements give a true and fair view. It offers reasonable assurance rather than a guarantee, and does not relieve management of its own responsibility for the accounts.
